Ewan joined Sponge Hammer Games as a Junior 3D artist to work on our very first game, Flatstone Grove. Now he works on Project Polly (which is a working title for our upcoming game). He joined Sponge Hammer Games because the company’s values and atmosphere were a perfect fit for him and his career trajectory.
Can you describe a typical day in your role and what you enjoy most about it?
Although my official title is Junior 3D artist, I find my role is way more versatile than just that. My typical day is usually a nice balance of 3D and 2D animations, with other jobs added in when required. I really value this aspect of the job as it encourages me to challenge myself and develop a wider skillset.
How do you like to unwind after a busy day or a challenging project?
I find it’s really helpful to go for a walk and clear my head, we’re lucky enough to live 10 minutes away from a cinema and shopping centre so there’s tons to get up to. If I’m too low on energy for that, I like to pop a comfort TV show on and work through my Steam catalogue.
If you could work on any dream project, what would it be and why?
I grew up playing a lot of PS2-era mascot platformers with my older brothers. Having that shared hobby really brought us closer and it is still one of my fondest memories. Working on reviving Games like Jak, Daxter, Ape Escape, and Rayman would be a dream come true.
What’s your favourite part about working at Sponge Hammer?
The entire Sponge Hammer team! Everyone’s super talented and are some of the nicest people I’ve had the pleasure to work with – the passion for learning and friendly atmosphere that we’re able to foster makes working at Sponge Hammer a privilege.
What games are you currently playing?
The PC port of FF7 Rebirth recently dropped on Steam, so a friend and I decided to play both Remake and Rebirth back-to-back. It was a lot of fun, but don’t ask me about the story! I also picked up Balatro to play whenever I have a spare 5-minutes but it’s quickly consumed my life.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
What’s a hobby or interest you’re passionate about outside of work?
I’ve been lucky enough for my passion to become my job, which has been amazing! For a while, I found I had nothing to do after work so I decided to pick up teaching myself piano and music production – it’s really nice having a creative hobby that’s just for you.
